Minister Erick Thohir Seeks Collaboration with TikTok, Youtube for Indonesia's Digital Economy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir has expressed his intention to facilitate discussions between TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, and President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to explore potential investments in the country's digital economy.
“They promised to visit Indonesia, but I haven't received the official confirmation letter. I'll just wait. I am ready to arrange a meeting between them and President Jokowi or Prabowo (President-elect) if they do decide to come,” Erick said at the Nawasena Mandiri Corporate University Building in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, July 30, 2024.
Erick encouraged healthy discussions with these tech giants to explore investment opportunities. He also emphasized the need to discuss strategies to preserve Indonesian culture amid the growing use of social media platforms among the younger generation.
“[We need to ensure that] our culture, Asian culture are preserved on these platforms. And there is potential for educational content sharing with other nations,” he remarked.
On Friday, July 26, 2024, Erick posted a photo with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan on his Instagram account. The meeting took place during dinner at the Louvre Museum in France.
During the meeting, Erick pitched Indonesia's digital economy potential, which he estimated to reach Rp4,500 trillion. Both Mohan and Chew expressed optimism about Indonesia's digital landscape and their willingness to contribute to its growth.
The minister confirmed that the meeting took place during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) event in France where he was invited as the IOC member.
Erick Thohir further emphasized the importance of attracting investments from global tech companies to drive Indonesia's economic expansion and job creation. “We want them to invest in Indonesia, as this will stimulate economic growth and job opportunities,” he concluded.
