TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Java's acting governor, Bey Triadi Machmudin, urged parents and schools to step up educational efforts to prevent children from being subjected to online gambling. His statement came in response to a finding that the province has the highest number of children exposed to online gambling, as reported by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK).
Speaking in Bandung on Tuesday, July 30, Bey assured that the West Java provincial government was paying serious attention to wiping out illegal online gambling and loans. The two, he said, are related and pose a danger to society.
"That is why education is crucial. We ask parents and schools to pay more attention," Bey said.
Last week, the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) said it had found 41,000 children in West Java playing online gambling games.
"Data by province shows that West Java has the highest number with 41,000 children," PPATK chief Ivan Yustiavandana said on Friday, July 26.
Ivan said that the number of online gambling transactions with children as players has reached a fantastic figure of Rp49.8 billion from 459,000 transactions.
On the same day, PPATK and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a form of commitment and cooperation towards child protection in relation to money laundering crimes involving children.
"This cooperation is an important step in protecting Indonesian children from being manipulated for financial gain," said KPAI chairwoman Ai Maryati.
