Autonomous Rail Transit Trial in New Capital Expected to Commence August 5; Free Tickets Offered

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said the trial for the autonomous tram transportation mode or Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) in the new capital city of Nusantara or IKN will commence on August 5.
The passengers of ART in the new capital city will be given free tickets during the trial period from August to December 2024.
This trackless train project trial will be carried out through cooperation with Chinese companies for free services. Regarding the prep for this transportation mode in IKN, Budi Karya explained the government has developed the roads and road markings.
"The Chinese companies will provide free services while we provide the roads and road markings that have been built by IKN Authority and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing,” said Budi Karya in an official statement, quoted Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Meanwhile, he added, the rolling stock for the autonomous train has arrived in Balikpapan, a neighboring city to IKN.
He said two train sets with three carriages each will be used during the free ART trial period. The train will be operated from the National Axis through the West Axis and East Axis in the autonomous tram will rotate through Jalan Sumbu Kebangsaan on the west and east sides of the Core Government Center Area (KIPP). The train sets will have a five-minute headway.
On Monday, July 29, the Minister of Transportation attended a limited meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to report on the transportation progress in the new capital city. During this meeting, the minister also conveyed the plan to collaborate with the provincial government and IKN Authority to manage the transportation in the new capital.
Currently, the Ministry of Transportation is preparing the Automatic People Mover System (APMV) targeted to be completed soon.
