TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, has expressed reservations about the government's plan to impose an excise tax on concert tickets. He emphasized that his ministry's focus remains on attracting foreign tourists to Indonesia.
“We won’t respond to it for now. We will focus on issues that are already before our eyes,” he said during a meeting at his office on Monday, July 29.
He emphasized that the issue should not cause polemics and that the ministry would wait for the decision. He acknowledged the government's need for additional revenue. However, he questioned the viability of imposing an excise tax on concert tickets.
He suggested a more thorough analysis to determine the potential impact on the industry and explore alternative revenue sources. “Are there other products or services that could be subject to excise instead?” he proposed.
Nirwala Dwi Heriyanto, Director of Communication and Guidance for Customs Service Users, clarified that the proposal to extend excise taxes to various goods, including concert tickets, fast food, and smartphones, is still under consideration.
“It has not been studied yet. [We are open] to suggestions from academics and other stakeholders,” he said in an official statement on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
He outlined the criteria for excise tax eligibility, including the need to control consumption, monitor product circulation, and address potential negative societal or environmental impacts.
According to him, only ethyl alcohol, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products are currently subject to excise tax. The government's decision-making process for expanding the excise tax base is cautious and considers various factors, such as economic conditions, industry impact, health concerns, and environmental implications.
