TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) has revealed a shocking trend in children involved in online gambling transactions. According to PPATK Head, Ivan Yustiavandana, the involvement of children in such activities is connected to online games
“There are 197,054 children aged between 11 and 19 [have engaged in online gambling], with a combined deposit reaching Rp293.4 billion,” Ivan said in his press statement on July 26, 2024, at the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) office, Central Jakarta.
During the press conference, the PPATK outlined that over 1,160 children under 11 have been involved in 22,000 transactions totaling more than Rp3 billion. For the 11-16 age group, 4,514 children participated in 45,000 transactions amounting to Rp7.9 billion. The most alarming figures, however, pertain to the 17-19 age bracket, with 191,380 children conducting 2.1 million transactions worth a staggering Rp282 billion.
“These are all school-age children. Children who are studying or being prepared to become future leaders of Indonesia,” Ivan said.
In response to these alarming findings, the PPATK has partnered with the KPAI through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The collaboration aims to prevent, address, and oversee child protection measures, particularly in the digital realm.
“We hope to shield children from the exposure [of online gambling] on the internet and the financial networks in mini markets that fuel online gambling,” Ivan concluded.
