Shield Your Android: How to Detect and Remove Malware

24 July 2024 22:39 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaCellphones contain a lot of personal data, making them attractive targets for malicious software, or malware. These digital threats can steal your information, disrupt phone performance, or even damage your device. But fear not! Here's a guide to help you detect and remove malware on your Android phone.

As reported by Tech Target, malware comes in various forms, each with its own devious purpose. They include spyware, ransomware, and Trojan horses.

How to Detect Malware on Android Cellphones

Being vigilant is crucial in identifying potential malware infections. Here are some key red flags to watch out for on your Android device:

1. Data Drain and Battery Drain

Malware often operates silently in the background, consuming data and draining your battery life at an unexpected rate.

2. Unknown Applications

The presence of unknown applications that you never downloaded can be a strong indicator of malware infection. Malicious programs may install themselves without your knowledge or consent.

3. Suspicious Ads and Pop-Up

A sudden increase in intrusive pop-up advertisements or unwanted advertising can be a sign of adware, a specific type of malware that bombards users with ads and potentially steals information.

4. Performance Deterioration

A noticeable decline in your phone's overall performance, such as frequent lags or crashes, could indicate malware consuming your device's resources.

5. Unexplained Messages and Emails

If your contacts receive messages (emails or social media) that appear to be from you but you never sent them, your phone might be infected with malware capable of hijacking your accounts.

How to Remove Malware on Android Cellphones

If you suspect your Android device has been compromised by malware, remain calm and follow these steps to eradicate the threat:

1. Activate Google Play Protect

Leverage Google Play Protect, your built-in security solution. Access the Play Store app, tap your profile picture, select Play Protect, and enable "Scan apps with Play Protect" to initiate regular scans for potential threats.

2. Update Your Android System and Security Software

Ensure your Android device is running the latest operating system version and security patches. These updates often include critical bug fixes and security improvements designed to address emerging malware threats.

3. Remove Untrusted Applications

If you suspect a specific app is causing issues, uninstall it from your device. Navigate to Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps, then select the app and tap Uninstall.

4. Conduct a Security Check

Visit myaccount.google.com/security-checkup using your phone's browser. This Google tool can identify and assist you in addressing any security vulnerabilities within your account.

5. Factory Reset

If the aforementioned steps fail to resolve the issue and signs of malware persist, consider performing a factory reset as the last resort. This will erase all your data and settings. Therefore, it is crucial to back up important information before proceeding. Consult your device manufacturer for specific instructions on performing a factory reset.

The best defense against malware is a proactive approach. By practicing safe browsing habits, avoiding downloading applications from untrusted sources, and keeping your software up-to-date, you can significantly minimize the risk of malware infection on your Android device.
