VP-Elect Gibran Rakabuming Visits Kominfo, Discusses Cybersecurity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, visited the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) office on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, to meet with Minister Budi Arie Setiadi.
According to a written statement from Kominfo, Gibran expressed his gratitude for the ministry's efforts in promoting digital transformation across Indonesia. The former mayor of Solo, emphasized the importance of synergy between central and regional governments to accelerate this nationwide digital transformation.
“Digital transformation is crucial for enhancing Indonesia's competitiveness in the age of globalization,” he said on Wednesday.
The discussion also delved into cybersecurity issues. Gibran and Minister Budi Arie explored strategies to strengthen cyber defenses and safeguard sensitive data and information from cyber threats.
“We stand ready to support various programs and initiatives undertaken by the new administration to expedite digital transformation in Indonesia,” said Budi Arie, who is also the chairman of the Projo (Pro Jokowi) volunteer group.
Kominfo's recent performance has been under public scrutiny following the National Data Center (PDN) hack. The leak sparked calls for Minister Budi Arie's resignation.
The LockBit 3.0 ransomware attack on PDN occurred on June 20, 2024. Ransomware is a type of malware targeting data systems. The Temporary National Data Center, which is located in Surabaya, manages data for 73 ministries and institutions, along with hundreds belonging to regional governments.
The government is implementing short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to restore public services disrupted by the PDN hack. The short-term plan involves a forensic investigation conducted by the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) and the National Police.
The medium-term plan, scheduled for August to September, focuses on re-deploying tenants and improving data governance and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Finally, the long-term strategy involves an independent third-party audit of the PDN, which is slated to begin in September, intending to implement the audit results by November 2024.
