TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bureau of UN Committee on Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) is visiting Indonesia from July 3-5, 2024. The delegation is scheduled to meet several government officials, including Vice President Ma’ruf Amin and Minister of Defense and President-elect Prabowo Subianto.
The visit is intended to gather insight from Indonesian stakeholders and express appreciation for Indonesia in its support for Palestine. On the first day of the visit, the delegation met with Indonesia’s Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation chaired by Gerindra Party’s Fadli Zon and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.
Permanent Representative of Senegal to the UN Cheikh Niang who led the delegation appreciated Indonesia’s commitment to promote the Palestinian cause.
CEIRPP consists of 25 member countries including Indonesia. The committee is chaired by Cheikh Niang, with five deputy chairs; Arrmanatha C. Nasir from Indonesia, Ahmad Faisal Muhamad from Malaysia, Neville Melvin Gertze from Namibia, Jaime Hermida Castillo from Nicaragua, and Ernesto Soberón Guzmán from Cuba.
Also participating as an observer is the Permanent Observer for Palestine at the UN Riyad H. Mansour. All members of the bureau were present during the Indonesian visit except Guzmán.
Arrmanatha said the committee spoke for over an hour with Retno Marsudi. During the meeting, he said, the bureau members discussed how Retno always raised the Palestinian issue at every opportunity, both in bilateral meetings and multilateral forums.
"That shows the personal commitment of Minister Retno as well as Indonesia in general. This recognition does not only come from the bureau, but the international community as a whole,” he said.
After a working visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation met with Indonesian VP Ma'ruf Amin. They are also slated for a meeting with Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta tomorrow, as well as several civil society organizations and companies.
Riyad Mansour revealed the committee would discuss many things with the Vice President and Minister of Defense, but some agenda could not be published due to its confidentiality.
