Prabowo Meets Old Friend King Abdullah II of Jordan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto met with Jordan's King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein on Monday. Prabowo arrived in Amman to attend the "Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza" summit on Tuesday, June 11.
Prabowo is known to be a long-time friend of King Abdullah II after they first met in 1995. They met again when Prabowo "fled" to Jordan after being accused of involvement in the abduction of activists in 1998, during which Prabowo said he was picked up in the VIP room and given a palace car.
During his meeting with Abdullah II on Monday, Prabowo delivered a message to the king from President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi.
Meanwhile, King Abdullah II congratulated Prabowo on his victory in the 2024 presidential election. The king also expressed his gratitude and respect for Prabowo's presence in Jordan to represent Jokowi at the summit.
A friendship that goes back a long way
King Abdullah II and Prabowo have been friends since they were army officers in their respective countries. Both are graduates of Fort Banning, a U.S. military training facility known for producing special forces personnel.
Prabowo said that Jordan is one of Indonesia's most active partners in advocating for the fate of the Palestinian people and that the Indonesian government continues to closely monitor the deteriorating situation in Gaza.
"Indonesia is very concerned about the current situation of the people in Gaza, who are very fragile," he said.
Prabowo and Abdullah II both underscored the importance of joint international efforts to coordinate and increase the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Abdullah II underlined the importance of the emergency summit to organize a humanitarian response for Gaza to unite efforts to coordinate and increase humanitarian aid to the Strip.
