TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi confirmed that he had met with several political party leaders at the end of last month. However, he denied there was any discussion regarding a reshuffle of ministers in the Onward Indonesia Cabinet.
Jokowi reportedly met with several party leaders at the State Presidential Palace on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, as confirmed by three sources to Tempo.
The same source said that one of the topics being discussed was cabinet reshuffling. Jokowi reportedly asked the leaders about a reshuffle in June for ministries who do not back the president’s performance. The party leaders was claimed to have advised Jokowi about the matter, stating the unnecessity of a reshuffle at the tail-end of his administration.
"I did meet (with the party leaders), but we didn’t talk about (cabinet reshuffle),” said Jokowi on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
The Onward Indonesia Cabinet led by Jokowi is backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, NasDem Party, National Awakening Party (PKB), United Development Party (PPP), and the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
Jokowi and his supporting parties are not a united front during the 2024 elections, with reports of Jokowi’s growing distance from his party, PDIP.
Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s son, has been elected as the vice president of Prabowo Subianto.
Jokowi reshuffled his cabinet 8 times during his reign. The most recent was Hadi Tjahjanto, who was sworn in as the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs in February 2024, replacing Mahfud Md. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, General Chair of the Democratic Party, then replaced Hadi as the Minister for Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning.
