Singapore Airlines Shares Slip 1.3% after Turbulent Flight

TEMPO.CO, SingaporeSingapore Airlines shares fell more than 1% in early trade on Thursday, May 23, following a deadly turbulence-hit flight.

One passenger died of a suspected heart attack and dozens were injured after flight Singapore Airlines SQ321 encountered what the airline described as sudden, extreme, turbulence while flying over Myanmar on Tuesday.

Singapore markets were closed for a holiday on Wednesday and resumed trade on Thursday. Early turnover in the stock was modest and it was last down 1.3% at S$6.67 ($4.94) after dipping as far as 1.8% to S$6.64.

The SQ321 flight departed from London Heathrow Airport, England, on Monday, May 20, 2024. The plane was supposed to land in Singapore, but the pilot requested an emergency landing after experiencing severe turbulence and diverted to Thailand on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, early morning local time.

Due to severe turbulence, Singapore Airlines SQ321 passengers, most of whom came from Australia, England, and Singapore, were injured and one person reportedly died. According to a Singapore Airlines statement, the 777-300ER aircraft was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members.
