TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi received a visit by ambassadors and representatives of embassies of Arab countries to Indonesia at her ministry’s office in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 2. The meeting lasted for more than an hour, during which the developments in Gaza were discussed.
Retno stressed the significance of unity in supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people and the moral responsibility to lend support to Palestine.
“All Indonesian people are involved in supporting the Palestinian struggle. I appreciate your proactive position in various international forums advocating for Palestine,” Palestinian Ambassador Zuhair S.M. Al Shun said.
During the meeting, Retno proposed three focus areas for Indonesia and Arab countries to tackle the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Firstly, ensuring the enforcement of Resolution 2728 (2024) which calls for a ceasefire.
“Indonesia welcomes the resolution. However, we all bear a profound responsibility to ensure that the resolution is upheld and respected by Israel,” she underlined.
To date, the UN Security Council has passed numerous resolutions on Palestine. Had these resolutions been put into effect, Palestine would not have to face the current impending crisis. Retno also deplored that Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza following the adoption of Resolution 2728.
Secondly, advocating for Palestinian membership in the UN. Indonesia supports Palestine's full membership in the UN and urges ambassadors to encourage their countries to do likewise. Thirdly, backing endeavors to sustain UNRWA, given its pivotal role in aiding Palestinian refugees.
Retno further lauded those countries that have decided to resume financial support to UNRWA.
Today's meeting between Minister Retno Marsudia and representatives of Arab countries was attended by seven ambassadors from Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Syria, Oman, and Egypt; as well as 13 representatives from embassies of Bahrain, Mauritania, Yemen, Lebanon, PEA, Iraq, Libya, Qatar, Kuwait, Tunisia, Sudan, Somalia, and Morocco.
