Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Congratulates Prabowo Subianto on Election Results

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto on the presumed winning of the 2024 presidential election, in a letter posted by Prabowo on Thursday evening, March 7, 2024.
"We are delighted to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Your Excellency on earning the trust of the brotherly people of Indonesia and winning the presidential election," Abbas said in the letter written in Ramallah dated February 25, 2024.
"We pray to Almighty Allah for your success and prosperity in fulfilling the noble tasks entrusted to you, and for achieving the aspirations and goals of your people," he wrote.
The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) president said Indonesia and Palestine are bound by "strong historical fraternal relations". He said his country is committed to working with Prabowo as the next president towards further development and enhancing lines of cooperation.
"We also express our great appreciation for Indonesia's steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and its people," the president wrote.
The Indonesian government has recently been amping up its support for Palestine in various international forums, amid the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza enclave. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi gave an oral statement before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of Palestine on February 23, 2024.
Posting Abbas' letter on social media X, Prabowo said it was an honor for him to receive congratulations from the Palestinian president.
"The Indonesian people are always with Palestine in its most difficult times and will continue to support the Palestinian people's struggle for peace and full independence," he said in a tweet.
Palestine follows other leaders who have congratulated Prabowo directly on the election results. Some countries such as the United States delayed congratulating the Defense Minister before the final results of the count came out. The 2024 election real count results from all polling stations in Indonesia will only be announced on March 20, 2024, according to the General Election Commission (KPU) schedule. Thus far, Prabowo Subianto leads the race with almost 60 percent of votes.
