Bawaslu Recommends Polling Station Method for Kuala Lumpur Re-Vote; Avoid Double Voting

5 March 2024 09:07 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaChairman of the Election Supervisory Agency, or Bawaslu, Rahmat Bagja recommended on Monday that the General Elections Commission or KPU conduct re-voting in Kuala Lumpur using the Polling Stations(TPS) method to avoid double voting.

Bagja said that the Kuala Lumpur Election Supervisory Committee or Panwaslu found problems in the matching and research process or Coklit which had an impact on the large number of voters included in the special voter list. "If I'm not mistaken, there were only around 68,000 or 60,000, [verified voters] at that time. The others weren't verified. So that's a big question too," said Bagja.

With the current list of attendance at the polling stations, according to Bagja, it is difficult to ensure that the voters casting their votes had not already done so on Feb. 14. Therefore, the attendance list during the re-vote will refer to voters who came to the polling station.

Bagja said that his side was also considering time constraints, considering that the re-vote must be held no later than March 20, 2024. "Yes,(we also consider the time constraints) because matching the data takes a long time. Disseminating the information will also become a problem," said Bagja.

Bagja hopes that the polling station method will not reduce the number of voters in Kuala Lumpur. " Hopefully the voters reach 62,000 people."

KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy'ari previously said that re-vote activities in Kuala Lumpur began with the calculation and determination of the overseas final voter list (DPTLN) which started from February 26 to March 1, 2024.

The re-vote will be carried out t for voters who previously voted using the postal method, mobile ballot boxes, and overseas polling stations. The mobile ballot box method is slated for Saturday, March 9, 2024, while the polling station vote will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

The re-vote will potentially have 62,217 voters. Hasyim explained that the figure was obtained by the KPU from the total voters present in Kuala Lumpur via three previous voting methods consisting of voters in the final voter list (DPT), additional voter list (DPTb), and special voter list (DPK).
