TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Japanese Police have arrested an Indonesian trainee on Thursday, February 29. The woman is suspected of leaving her newborn baby to die.
In Japan, child abandonment is a serious crime punishable by up to five years in prison.
The Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka confirmed that it had received information about the Indonesian arrest. The suspect, JP, is a 21-year-old who is currently training as an intern in Hiroshima Prefecture. She was arrested by the Onomichi City Police.
The Consulate General said it has been in contact with the Onomichi Police and relevant parties, including the Job Training Institute (LPK) in Indonesia as the sender and host of migrant workers in Japan.
There is no information yet on where JP allegedly abandoned the baby. The Japanese police refused to provide more detailed information about JP as the suspect has not given her consent.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the Onomichi police are currently conducting an investigation to determine JP's legal status.
"The Indonesian Foreign Ministry and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka will continue to monitor this case and provide consular assistance if JP grants permission and access," Foreign Ministry spokesman Lalu Muhammad Iqbal told reporters.
