TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur, West Java, confirmed that there was no damage due to the two earthquakes that rocked the regency this morning, February 5. Reports came from a number of officers who were dispatched to a number of areas that felt quite strong earthquake vibrations, namely Cugenang, Cianjur and Pacet.

The BMKG said that the three areas experienced a MMI III scale earthquake. "As of Monday afternoon there were no reports of damage to buildings or other facilities," BPBD Cianjur chief executive Asep Sukma Wijaya said.

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake hit Cianjur at 08:25. Despite the small scale, the land earthquake centered seven kilometers northwest of Cianjur was quite shallow with a depth of six kilometers, making the vibrations feel quite strong.

Two minutes later at 08:27, another earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 struck the area. The second quake also had a land epicenter at six kilometers northwest of Cianjur with a depth of nine kilometers.

According to BMKG, the two shallow earthquakes were centered in Cugenang District, which is the Cugenang earthquake fault. This earthquake fault caused 50,000 buildings to be damaged and 600 people died on November 21, 2022.

Traumatized by memories of the earthquake in 2022 caused panic and paranoia in society. Many residents ran out of their homes, including students from classrooms at their schools, some of them crying.
