Indonesia Develops Global Navigation Techniques for Atmospheric Dynamics, Hydrometeorology Research

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency or BRIN is developing the Global Navigation Satellite System-Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) technique as an innovative remote sensing method. This development is carried out on a global scale for research into atmospheric dynamics and hydrometeorology.

BRIN's expert researcher at the Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research, Noersomadi, said that the development of GNSS-RO for atmospheric dynamics research was carried out through GNSS for Atmospheric Observation and Tracking the Climate Change, or Gatotkaca for short. BRIN has also released a website for this research at the address gatotkaca.brin.go.id. Gatotkaca is a character from the epic Mahabharata, the son of Bhima.

The observations published in Gatotkaca are obtained from the Constellation Satellites for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate mission #2 or COSMIC-2 GNSS-RO satellite.

"Users can access data on humidity, either in the form of a data list or a visualized humidity data viewer," Noersomadi said as published on BRIN's official website, 29 January.

The Gatotkaca site is equipped with a contour technique, overlaid on a base map of Indonesia, allowing users to see the data combined with legends or descriptions, latitudes and longitudes, as well as visualizations that are easy to analyze and interpret.

Gatotkaca is claimed to have excellent accuracy because it has high vertical resolution and the coverage is available on both land and sea. "This means that measurements are carried out continuously and are not limited by weather conditions such as sunny, cloudy, or others," the researcher said.

Noersomadi said that users can also download the data contained on the Gatotkaca site for free.
