The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Indonesia Explores Cooperation with Norwegian Satellite Company
Indonesia's Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has explored cooperation potential in technology with a Norwegian spacecraft communication services provider, Kongsberg Satellite Service (KSAT), to bolster the implementation of blue economy work programs.
"KSAT has the capacity and experience in earth observation satellite, development of hardware and software for maritime surveillance, as well as ship detection, to monitor illegal activities at sea," he said in a statement on Sunday.
2. Top 8 Countries with Largest Nickel Reserves in the World
Nickel has been a hot topic in Indonesia following last week's election debate during which vice presidential candidate number 2, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, accused his rival candidate number 1, Muhaimin Iskandar, of being anti-nickel, as the latter's campaign team co-captain Thomas Lembong often claimed that nickel was losing popularity to lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) in the global electric vehicle market.
The debate over nickel, including its use for EV batteries, continued. Several ministers backed President Jokowi’s eldest son and questioned Lembong’s statement. They include the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Luhut Pandjaitan, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, and former Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi.
3. Tom Lembong Talks of Jokowi's Second-Term Curse
Economist Thomas Trikasih Lembong, popularly known as Tom Lembong, highlighted the second-term curse of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s administration in a podcast with Novel Baswedan, a former investigator of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), released on Sunday, January 28. The podcast, titled 'Ahjussi Tom Lembong Bicara Soal Mental Penguasa', was released on January 28th.
Lembong, who served as the co-captain of the campaign team of presidential pair Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar, was asked about the alleged corruption in the national strategic projects, illegal bleaching of palm oil plantations, and suspected illegal nickel exports and imports between China and Indonesia.
He did not deny the existence of the problems and estimated that the ratio of the corrupt programs was between 30-50% of the total projects. He also described the situation as a second-term curse.
