TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi inaugurated the military academy building in Magelang, Central Java, on Monday, January 29. He hoped that the building would encourage future soldiers to study better.
He led the inauguration ceremony of the Graha Utama Akmil building alongside Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto. The president has been on a working visit to Central Java since last weekend.
In his speech, he emphasized that global politics and economics are changing, leading to disruption and technological advancement, including in the military sector.
“Military academies must be able and willing to adapt, to adapt to disruption, to technological changes. Therefore, STEM learning is very necessary in the military. Science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and all must be studied,” he said, as monitored via the Indonesian Ministry of Defense's YouTube live broadcast today.
The three-story Graha Utama Akmil was built in an area of 8,306 meters. Prabowo added that the dining hall had also been renovated to accommodate 1,200 people. However, he stopped short of mentioning the cost.
“This development is expected to improve the quality of education for the nation's future cadets,” said Prabowo, who is running for president in February's presidential election.
Other state officials attending the ceremony included the Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Acting Governor of Central Java Nana Sudjana, and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
