TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, or Sultan HB X, stated that he would stay neutral despite receiving visits from presidential and vice presidential candidates competing in the upcoming February elections.
Earlier today, January 22, Sultan HB X received a visit from candidate pair number 2 Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka at the Yogyakarta Kepatihan Complex. In late December 2023, he also welcomed candidate number 3 Ganjar Pranowo.
“I'm not part [of the campaign team of any candidates],” Sultan said after meeting with Prabowo-Gibran.
The King of the Yogyakarta Palace stressed that he remained open to meeting with candidates. All candidates may also conduct campaigns in the region in an orderly manner and maintain a good atmosphere.
Sultan claimed that the meeting with Prabowo-Gibran was cordial as they discussed various topics, including this year's presidential election. The meeting was private and lasted approximately one hour.
Ditya Nanaryo Aji, spokesperson for the Yogyakarta Regional Secretary, said that there was nothing special about the visit. According to him, Sultan HB X always accepted anyone who wanted to visit the region. However, he said this would not affect the neutrality of the governor in the 2024 elections.
“He (Sultan HB X) is considered an elder figure in Indonesia, so it is common for people to want to meet him for advice, including the presidential and vice presidential candidates,” Ditya said.
