TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate number one, Anies Baswedan, stated that he would push for mainstreaming two corruption eradication concepts if elected as president as part of his anti-corruption commitment.

"We will push the concepts of illicit enrichment and trading in influence," he said during the Paku Integritas event on Wednesday in the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The former governor of Jakarta mentioned that the two concepts align with the provisions under the United Nations Convention against Corruption of UNCAC. "In accordance with UNCAC, [the concepts] hopefully will become mainstream in corruption eradication," he added.

According to the UNCAC document accessed from unodc.org, illicit enrichment is defined as a significant increase in the assets of a public official that they cannot reasonably explain about their lawful income.

Citing kpk.go.id, illicit enrichment may cause reasonable speculation that the assets are obtained unlawfully, for example, through corruption or money laundering.

Meanwhile, trading in influence is defined under Article 18 UNCAC as promising, offering, giving, or accepting undue advantage by a public official or any other person through abuse of influence.

According to KPK's website, people with access to decision-makers often conduct trade in influence. For example, higher-ups in a political party trade in influence to a member of said party.

UNCAC is an international agreement inked on December 9, 2023. The convention highlighted international cooperation against corruption.
