TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Countries in the world are divided into two main categories by the United Nations (UN), namely "developed countries" and "developing countries". This classification is based on economic status such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Gross National Product (GNP), per capita income, industrialization, living standards, etc.
Quoting from keydifferences.com, "developed countries" refer to sovereign countries, which economies are very advanced, and have superior technological infrastructure compared to other nations. Meanwhile, countries with low industrialization and human development index are called "developing countries".
Determinants of Developed and Developing Countries
Apart from PDP, GNP, per capita income, industrialization, and living standards, there are a number of other variables or other factors that determine whether a country is in the "developed" or "developing" category.
These determining factors are child welfare, health care and medical facilities, transportation facilities, communication and education facilities, housing conditions and lifestyle. Other factors are life expectancy, literacy skills, infrastructure and technology, and national debt.
Apart from that, developed and developing countries are also distinguished by the factors of national debt, equal distribution of income, births and deaths, unemployment and poverty.
From the factors above, the following can be concluded about the differences between developed and developing countries. Countries that are independent and prosperous are known as developed countries. Countries that are facing the beginning of industrialization are called developing countries.
Developed countries have high per capita income and GDP compared to developing countries. The literacy rate in developed countries is high, but in developing countries the illiteracy rate is high.
Developed countries have better infrastructure and environment in terms of health and safety. This does not yet exist in developing countries.
Developed countries generate income from the industrial sector. In contrast, developing countries generate income from the services sector. The standard of living of people in developed countries is high, while in developing countries it is moderate.
Resources are utilized effectively and efficiently in developed countries. On the other hand, developing countries have not utilized appropriate resources. Birth and death rates are low in developed countries, while in developing countries both are high.
