Jokowi Meets Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, Discussing MRT Development and Palestine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi held a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in Tokyo, Japan, on Saturday, Dec. 16. The meeting discussed various issues, from bilateral partnerships of Indonesia and Japan, and Palestine issue.
Both state leaders talked about the MRT Jakarta development. President Jokowi conveyed his appreciation for Japan’s commitment to the development of MRT’s east-west route, hoping that the next phase of development could run as planned.
"I hope the development of the north-south route, phase 2A and 2B, can finish on time," Jokowi said in a written statement on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
As for the energy transition issue, Indonesia as co-initiator of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) stressed the importance of inclusive funding decarbonization cooperation and low-carbon technology transfer. In addition, AZEC has to follow up on the 12 MoUs signed during the AZEC ministers’ meeting a while ago.
"And please support the acceleration of three priority projects: geothermal power plant in Muara Laboh; waste to energy project in Legok Nangka; and peatland management in Central Kalimantan," said the President.
At the meeting, Indonesia and Japan also discussed partnerships in the fields of critical minerals and maritime.
Jokowi hopes that Japan will support the downstream mineral industry in Indonesia and Indonesia’s contribution as an important part of the global electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain.
Lastly, President Jokowi and PM Kishida also touched on the Palestine issue. Jokowi emphasized Indonesia's commitment to continue seeking a permanent ceasefire, planning sustainable humanitarian assistance, and encouraging the start of a peace process to achieve a two-state solution as soon as possible.
"And Japan’s support is highly needed," said the President.
