BPS: Jakarta Has Highest Living Cost of at Nearly Rp15mn per Month

12 December 2023 16:13 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaStatistics Indonesia (BPS) released a list of the top ten cities with the highest monthly living cost based on the results of the 2022 Cost of Living Survey (SBH).

The survey, which is conducted every five years, found that Jakarta topped the list with an average monthly household consumption of Rp14.88 million. The figure increased from the 2018 survey, which stood at Rp13.4 million.

Bekasi followed with a total cost of living of Rp14.3 million per month, up from Rp13.6 million in 2018.

“We can see that the first most expensive city in 2018 was Bekasi, and Jakarta was in second place. In 2022, they changed places as Jakarta was in the first place, followed by Bekasi,” the BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, said as broadcast via the BPS YouTube channel on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

According to her, other cities had the same pattern. “But in 2018, Jayapura was one of the cities with the highest average consumption value. In 2022, Jayapura was not included and was replaced by Balikpapan. So that's the difference,” Pudji added.

Here are the top ten Indonesian cities with the highest living costs, according to the BPS:

1. Jakarta: Rp14.88 million

2. Bekasi: Rp14.33 million

3. Surabaya: Rp13.35 million

4. Depok: Rp12.35 million

5. Makassar: Rp11.50 million

6. Tangerang: Rp10.96 million

7. Bogor: Rp10.73 million

8. Kendari: Rp10.23 million

9. Batam: Rp10.02 million

10. Balikpapan: Rp9.86 million
