TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi claimed that tree planting activities are a concrete action by Indonesia to tackle climate change, following criticism by environmental groups over the food estate program.
"We are aiming to move toward greening—planting trees, so we are taking concrete steps concerning climate change," he said.
Closing his working visit to NTT on Tuesday, Jokowi planted trees with residents and students in Embung Anak Munting, West Manggarai Regency, NTT.
"Tree planting is conducted to tackle climate change, global warming, and pollution," Jokowi said earlier on Wednesday, Nov. 29, after a similar event in Pulogadung Industrial Area, Jakarta
Activists from Greenpeace, Save Our Borneo, Legal Aid Institute, and the Indonesian Forum for Living Environment of East Kalimantan criticized Jokowi on climate change and food estate recently. They specifically referred to Jokowi's speech during the COP28 climate conference in Dubai regarding agricultural investment.
Greenpeace called the food estate project a massive failure by Jokowi and his administration, especially concerning climate commitment. "The climate policy must be corrected in future administrations. The presidential candidates in the 2024 general elections cannot face the other way. Food estate has failed and must be stopped," Arie Rompas, the head of the forest campaign team of Greenpeace said.
