Indonesia's Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Again

5 December 2023 07:33 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, Lampung, experienced yet another eruption on Monday, December 4, at 22:57 local time, sending ash columns about 1,500 meters above the summit or 1,657 meters above sea level.

According to the official website of the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center or PVMBG, the eruption emitted thick black columns of ash towards the northwest and was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 64 millimeters for two minutes and 30 seconds.

Andi Suardi, the head of the active volcano’s observation post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, urged the public and fishermen to stay away from the volcano within a five-kilometer radius. The closest village to the mountain is on Sebesi Island, which is 16.5 kilometers away.

“Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at alert level III, Siaga. It is recommended that the public, fishermen, and hikers, do not approach the mountain within a radius of five kilometers,” he underlined. Alert level III or Siaga is the second-highest level of the country's four-tiered alert system.

Previously, Mount Anak Krakatau erupted on Saturday, December 2, 2023. The first eruption occurred at 07:59 local time, spewing white to gray columns of ash about 500 meters into the air or 657 meters above sea level. The ash moved northwest.

Another eruption occurred at 11:21 local time, ejecting thick black columns of ash about 700 meters above the summit, or 857 meters above sea level, toward the northeast.
