TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is running as a vice presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 election, responded to the controversy surrounding his bachelor's degree. In response to the issue, he stressed that he is willing to show his diploma to anyone who doubts its authenticity.
During a talk show hosted by Mata Najwa at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, November 19, Gibran was shown a photo of his diploma from 13 years ago by journalist and presenter Najwa Shihab.
“This photo is being disputed by two parties, with some claiming that the photo is edited and the diploma is fake,” Gibran said.
The Solo Mayor also said that he would take his diploma to Solo City Hall to verify its authenticity and even joked about giving tickets to Singapore to those who doubt the legitimacy of his diploma to visit the college.
“I'll book a ticket to Singapore and [you can] visit the school,” said the eldest son of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi.
The controversy surrounding Gibran's degree arose after a social media account accused him of not having a bachelor's degree and posted a certificate from the Directorate General of Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary Education in 2019 on the equivalence of Gibran's education at the vocational school level.
The letter stated that Gibran had completed grade 12 at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Insearch in Sydney, Australia in 2006. UTS Insearch is an educational institution that offers pathway programs to UTS.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry’s Acting Director General of Higher Education, Nizam, confirmed that Gibran holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Bradford, Singapore. This is stated in the Decree of the Director General of Learning and Student Affairs on the certificate of the equivalence of diplomas for foreign university graduates on behalf of Gibran Rakabuming Raka dated August 8, 2019.
“Gibran's diploma was issued in Singapore on November 14, 2010,” Nizam told Tempo on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
Gibran Rakabuming Raka is Prabowo Subianto's running mate in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, backed by the Indonesia Onward Coalition, which consists of the Gerindra Party, the Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the Democratic Party, the Garuda Party, the Gelora Party, the Prima Party, and the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
