Jokowi Talks IKN in US Visit to University of Georgetown

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi explained the IKN project on Monday during his visit to the US in front of the academic community at the University of Georgetown, Washington DC.
The State Leader also received a question from a college student on the government's ambition to develop IKN to tackle sustainability, livability, and economic development.
Answering the question, Jokowi explained the concept of IKN or the Nusantara State Capital. "Nusantara, the new capital city has a smart forest city concept, a modern and environmentally friendly city," he said in the live stream uploaded by the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel on Tuesday evening.
The majority, or 70 percent of land in IKN is green areas, which is envisioned to be a heterogenous forest emulating a rainforest.
Additionally, the majority of the transportation in IKN will be electric-based. "And 80 percent are public transportation, with 100 percent of the residents using electric vehicles," Jokowi said.
Thus, Jokowi remarked, the first thing to be built in IKN was a botany center. The botany center is expected to create 15 to 16 million seeds each year, which will be planted in IKN and across Kalimantan.
"We are hoping to reside in [IKN] starting August 2024," he concluded.
