Jokowi Meets With Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the OIC Summit Sidelines

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC Summit) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Jokowi expressed deep concern over the aggression launched by Israel into the occupied Palestinian territories.
Observed on the X social media account, previously known as Twitter, Jokowi shared a picture of himself embracing Abbas on the sidelines of the OIC summit yesterday.
"Friendly embrace for His Excellency Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas," wrote Jokowi's official account.
"Indonesia is committed to supporting Palestine optimally and concretely. Violence must be stopped immediately. The forced displacement of civilians must end. Humanitarian aid must be provided immediately," said the president, in a different written statement distributed by the Palace Press Bureau.
Abbas asks Jokowi to convey a message to Joe Biden
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, in a press statement in Riyadh on Saturday, said that Mahmoud Abbas really appreciates Indonesia's consistency in providing support to the Palestinian struggle.
"President Abbas also asked President Jokowi to convey a message to the US during his meeting with President Biden in Washington DC on November 13," said Retno.
Jokowi proposes 4 solutions
The 2024 OIC Summit was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The meeting was held to give pressure to the United States and Israel to end attacks on Gaza, Palestine. The OIC summit also urged the International Criminal Court to investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel in the Palestinian territories, according to the final communique.
President Jokowi proposed four solutions to resolve Israeli aggression against the occupied Palestinian territory in the Gaza Strip in his speech at the meeting. First, the president asked for an immediate ceasefire. Second, Indonesia also asked the OIC to encourage the acceleration and expansion of sustainable humanitarian assistance to Palestine.
Third, Jokowi asked the OIC to use all fronts to hold Israel accountable for humanitarian atrocities in Palestine. Fourth, the president urged the OIC to restart peace negotiations in order to realize a two-state solution.
