Govt Finds Dutch Ship Illegally Dredging Sand in Jakarta Waters

30 October 2023 20:15 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries stopped a Dutch-flagged vessel for allegedly dredging sand without licenses in the waters off Tunda Island, Jakarta.

The ministry’s surveillance ship HIU 06 spotted the ship, MV. VOX MAXIMA, engaged in the illegal practice on Friday, October 27, 2023.

“It is known that the ship was employed by PT HLS to dredge sea sand for the reclamation project in Tanjung Priok, Jakarta,” the ministry’s Directorate General of Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision Adin Nurawaluddin said in a press statement, on Monday, October 30, 2023.

The ministry revealed that the vessel had a one-way load of 26,000 m3 and a crew of 40 people who were foreign nationals, including the captain.

During the inspection, the ministry’s team found evidence in the form of sea sand totaling about 24,000 m3. “So it can be concluded that this ship had only been operated once,” Adin said.

The ministry also summoned PT HLS. Adin explained PT HLS committed four alleged violations. These include exploiting sea sediment products without permits and not having the required licenses, including using sea sand for reclamation.

The Special Police for the Management of Coastal Areas and Small Islands (Polsus PWP3K) conducted the initial investigation. The ministry would then conduct an in-depth study of the dredging site in Tunda Island waters following Government Regulation (PP) No. 26 of 2023 on sea sedimentation products.

During the investigation, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries also secured the Dutch-flagged ship and its equipment, as well as its documents and sea sand cargo at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta.
