5.9M Earthquake Jolts Maluku on Thursday Afternoon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude jolting the Banda Sea, Southwest Maluku, Maluku, on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 12:44 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
"The earthquake was caused by rock deformation inside the subducted plate under the Banda Sea," said the head of Earthquake and Tsunami in BMKG Daryono in a press release. He also explained that the quake possessed a thrust fault movement.
The earthquake was located 196 kilometers northeast of Southwest Maluku at 159 kilometers depth.
According to BMKG, the earthquake was felt on a III-IV MMI scale. No casualties were reported as a result of this earthquake.
So far, no aftershocks and potential for tsunamis have been recorded, BMKG stated.
Daryono urged the residents in Maluku to stay calm and vigilant of any unconfirmed news.
