TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Indonesia in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a series of talk shows and an exhibition in celebration of the 78th anniversary of the United Nations. The event took place today, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the National Library in Jakarta.
“I wish you a happy 78th anniversary of the United Nations….Let's strengthen our shared commitment, to collaborate in realizing peace and prosperity for a better world,” Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said as quoted in a press release received by Tempo English today, Oct. 24.
The talk shows focused on the Indonesian role in multilateral diplomacy, the ongoing energy transition, the importance of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, and the job opportunities in the United Nations.
The first panel discussion that took place in the National Library provided insights into multilateralism as seen by Indonesian youth, and discussed job opportunities within the United Nations. "Indonesia remains committed to strengthening multilateralism and being part of the solution," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in her remarks.
The third session in this series of talk shows commemorating the UN anniversary highlighted cultural preservation. The dialogue underscored cultural heritage's intrinsic value in promoting global unity and understanding.
Meanwhile, the talk show on energy transition highlighted Indonesia's journey towards sustainable energy solutions. It recognized progress in areas such as electrification and the promotion of clean cooking but also delved into the challenges faced. "More than its practical application, sustainable energy access can transform societies, bridging gaps and promoting inclusive growth,” Julliand noted during the talk show.
An exhibition also took place during the event, participated by twenty UN agencies, offering insights into potential career paths within these diverse agencies, and shedding light on the multifaceted operations of the United Nations.
"Despite its limitations and imperfections, the UN continues to be our best hope for peace," UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia, Valerie Julliand emphasized.
