BMKG Predicts Thunderstorms in Banda Aceh, Medan; Haze over 4 Cities

12 October 2023 09:41 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the possibility of rain accompanied by lightning in Banda Aceh and Medan today, October 12. “Light rain is likely to wet Bengkulu, Tarakan, Ambon, Pekanbaru, and Padang,” the agency said in its weather forecast.

Meanwhile, Jambi, Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, and Palembang are shrouded in smoke haze, and Pekanbaru is covered in fog.

The air temperature ranges from 20 to 35 degrees Celcius, with the lowest temperature in Bandung and the highest temperatures in Serang, Semarang, Surabaya, Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, and Makassar.

The agency also issued an early warning of the impact of heavy rain in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, North Kalimantan, and Papua.

There is also an early warning of high waves that could occur in several Indonesian waters on October 12-13, 2023.

Wind patterns in northern Indonesia generally move from the southeast to the southwest at speeds of 4-20 knots. Meanwhile, in southern Indonesia, it moves typically from east-southeast at a speed of 10-25 knots. The highest wind speeds have been observed in the waters south of Banten, the southern Sunda Strait, the Java Sea, and the southern Makassar Strait.

BMKG said this condition causes the possibility of rising waves up to 2.5-4 meters in the western waters of Lampung, the Indian Ocean west of the Mentawai Islands to Lampung, the waters south of Banten-West Java, the southern part of the Sunda Strait, and the Indian Ocean south of Java-NTB.
