TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shopee Indonesia has officially stopped selling products from cross-border sellers as of Wednesday, October 4, at 10 p.m. Jakarta time following the issuance of the Trade Minister’s Regulation No. 31/2023 amending the Trade Minister’s Regulation No. 50/2020.
Head of Public Policy of Shopee Indonesia, Radityo Triatmojo, explained that cross-border transactions on the platform were recorded at less than one percent. The mechanism was also in line with the applicable laws and regulations, including taxation.
According to him, the products sold cross-border in the platform are not products that directly compete with local MSME products.
“Because we have closed 14 cross-border product categories that compete with MSME products as ordered by the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs in 2021,” Radityo said in a press statement, on Thursday, October 5.
He reiterated that the cross-border sales service aims to provide equal opportunities for local products to be able to directly access the export market. At present, more than 20 million local MSME products are available in cross-border markets in the ASEAN region, East Asia, and Latin America.
“Even though cross-border sellers in Indonesia are restricted, we will try to prevent it from affecting the current export activities of Indonesian products,” Radityo stressed.
He also said that Shopee Indonesia will continue to work on developing local products not only in the domestic market but also in overseas markets. One of the ways is to hold programs at 10 Shopee MSME Campuses spread across the archipelago.
