TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kaesang Pangarep acknowledged that being the son of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi led him to become the chair of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
“Privilege exists. That’s it,” Kaesang said at the political declaration of PSI at Djakarta Theater, Jakarta, on Monday, September 25, 2023.
The PSI’s board of trustees deputy chair Grace Natalie officially introduced Kaesang as the general chairman of the PSI. Jokowi’s youngest son had just joined the millennial party on September 23, 2023.
PSI secretary-general Raja Juli Antoni revealed the reasons why his party chose Kaesang as PSI chair. He said Kaesang is a successful young person with a good and humble communication style. He hoped that Kaesang would lead the party into the Senayan parliament.
“We hope that Mas Kaesang can fight together with us to have legislative seats in 2024,” Raja said.
Grace Natalie claimed that the PSI has a habit of making someone who is a novice in politics become the general chairman. She recalled that she was the first chairperson and was later replaced by Giring Ganesha, a musician and a former Nidji vocalist.
“There are mostly newbies (newcomers) in PSI. We don't have experience but we work together as a collegial team. That is our strength. So we are very optimistic that Mas Bro Kaesang won't stand alone. We are all ready to give full support to run straight to the 2024 elections,” Grace said.
