PUPR Minister Visits Beijing, Invites China to Invest in IKN and Water Infrastructure Project

12 September 2023 00:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR)  Basuki Hadimuljono invited China to invest in water infrastructure and IKN projects.

"There are several [projects] ongoing such as the Pelosika dam, and we also conducted several cooperations," Basuki said in between attending the 18th  World Water Congress in Beijing on Monday, September 11, 2023.

Basuki attended the congress to promote Indonesia as the host for the 10th World Water Forum in 2024. Additionally, the government is exploring cooperation opportunities between Indonesia and China.

In regards to IKN, Basuki mentioned that the government will continue to net investments including from Asian countries. "We will strive to cooperate with China, Japan, and Korea. Korea has supervised the waste design and provides grants. So, [the cooperations] with Korea, Japan, China, and the Netherlands are ongoing," he said.

The expert staff of PUPR Ministry on Technology, Industry, and Environment Endra Saleh Atmawidjaja mentioned that one of the missions of Indonesian delegates in the congress is to urge infrastructure cooperation with China.

"The second mission is specifically to bolster bilateral relations with China, for example in regards to several dams, such as Pelosika, Jenelata, and Riam Kiwa," he said.

The PUPR Ministry also promoted IKN, the Nusantara State Capital to China. "China is really interested in IKN development, in terms of infrastructure, they could invest in the public apartments instead of the civil servant apartment," he added.

Infrastructure cooperation between Indonesia and China started in 2022 with the signing of an MoU between the Communication Ministry of China and the PUPR Ministry of Indonesia in regard to bridges, roads, and infrastructure projects. The cooperation then extended to other sectors such as water resources, waste management, and sanitation.
