Transportation Minister Claims LRT Jabodebek 'A Major Achievement in the Transportation Sector'

28 August 2023 22:38 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi claims that LRT Jabodebek is a realization of the government's commitment to the public. The light rail transit is officially inaugurated by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Monday, August 28, 2023, in Cawang LRT Station, South Jakarta.

Minister Budi mentioned that the inauguration today is a historical moment. "Praise be to God, [LRT Jabodebek] is a major developmental achievement in the advancing transportation sector," he said on Monday, August 28, 2023.

The minister reported to the president that LRT Jabodebek is one of the measures for environmentally friendly and secure transportation services. He also mentioned that LRT Jabodebek has been integrated into other transportation modes such as KRL, BRT, TransJakarta, MRT, and JakLingko.

"The integration will eventually also reach Bandung. We are hoping that this concept could be a pattern for city development across Indonesia," he said.

According to Minister Budi, LRT Jabodebek is the realization of the modernization of public transportation with an ever-developing technology. "We hope that today's operation smooth-sails and secure," he remarked.

Previously, Jokowi said that around 996,000 vehicles enter Jakarta daily, granting it a top ten position of the most congested cities in the world. This, according to the president, is the precise reason for the development of MRT, LRT, KRL, TransJakart, BRT, and airport trains.

The purpose, said Jokowi, is to encourage the public to shift from private vehicles to mass transportation. Jokowi admitted that this will not be easy, as proven by MRT which has not been able to surpass its daily 180,000 passengers target.

"Today, LRT is ready to operate from Harjamukti in Cibubur and from Bekasi to Jakarta stretching along 41.2 kilometers. LRT spent Rp32.6 trillion. We hope the public will shift to use LRT [instead of private vehicles] to avoid traffic congestion and reduce pollution," said Jokowi.
