Indonesia Inks Transnational Crime Agreement with 6 ASEAN Members

22 August 2023 10:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and six other ASEAN country members signed an MoU on transnational crime in the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime in Labuan Bajo, NTT, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

According to the official statement received in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia was represented by the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. Meanwhile, the other six countries involved in the MoU are Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

Generally, the MoU provided cooperation on transnational crime prevention and enforcement. The MoU also provided the improvement of inter-state capacity development.

During the meeting, General Sigit emphasized the necessity of prioritizing the region's security and stability to realize a prosperous ASEAN. Sigit said that transnational crime is a mutual enemy since it disregards borders, sovereignty, and law.

Sigit also said that the modus operandi of transnational criminals is changing, taking advantage of technological advancement.

Thus, according to Sigit, cooperation and collaboration are crucial to think and act as a community while also respecting each country's law.

"Allow me to stress once again the importance of communication and cooperation to maintain the stability, security, and peace in the region," he said during the meeting.
