TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo mentioned that his successor is required to have the capability of sustaining the various projects that will be inherited by him.
"This is not about who [will be elected as] the president. Not that, but rather the matter of whether they are capable to sustain the existing projects. Are they brave to do so? Are they consistent? Because we are not going on an afternoon walk," said Jokowi during MPR annual session in Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.
According to the president, the government is not sprinting toward its goals. Thus, he went on, the next president has to be capable of maintaining the consistency of structural reform, especially concerning regulatory simplification, easing permits, legal certainty, and corruption prevention.
In addition, Jokowi also said that the elected 2024 President will face arduous challenges which prompt the need for public trust to take difficult decisions.
"A leader has to have public trust since it's one of the deciding factors [of a leader]. The implementation of a decision [relies on public trust]. This is the political capital needed to pilot a country," he said.
Jokowi also stressed that a leader needs support and collaboration from all state components.
