TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo talked about the shortage of subsidized 3-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) canisters in the community. He said the LPG which is only intended for the poor is being demanded by many parties.
“LPG, especially the subsidized one, is indeed demanded in the field while it's only for those poor people. That must be underlined,” he said in a statement broadcast on Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube on Monday, July 24, 2023.
The state head could not explain the exact cause of the shortage in detail. He said the issue is under the responsibility of SOE Minister Erick Thohir.
“So regarding the scarcity, let Pak SOE answer it because this is related to Pertamina under his leadership,” he shortly said.
During his visit to the Bululawang Market in Malang, Jokowi was accompanied by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and SOE Minister Erick Thohir. The two ministers were invited to visit state-owned defense company PT Pindad's defense equipment factory in the city.
Apart from monitoring the shortage of LPG, the President also checked the prices of basic necessities at the traditional market. According to him, food prices are quite stable.
“I see the prices here are very good. Chicken meat is Rp34,000, shallot is also at Rp26,000. That's very cheap here,” he said.
Jokowi said that the affordable prices are because most of the staple food production is in Malang Regency. Stable prices, he added, are a sign that inflation in the area is well controlled.
