Myanmar's Supreme Court to Hear Appeals from Aung San Suu Kyi

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta In a case brought by the army, Myanmar's Supreme Court will hear the pleading of the coasted leader Aung San Suu Kyi this week, says a source, on Monday, July 3, 2023. The Nobel Prize winner will plead against two counts of her convictions to reduce the 33 years in prison she previously received.

The 78-year-old woman was convicted of several counts, including incitement, election fraud and corruption allegations since the military coup of February 2021 against her elected government.

Suu Kyi's allies and the Western governments denounced her incarceration, claiming it a junta play to prevent the return of Myanmar's popular figure in their struggle for democracy.

The Supreme Court announced their plan to hear Suu Kyi's appeal on Wednesday against her counts over a breach of an official secret act and election fraud. The anonymous source stated that due to the sensitivity of the case, the decision could take up to two months.

The spokesperson for the junta could not be immediately reached for a confirmation.

The military insists that the defendants were afforded due process in an independent court, denying critics from human rights groups for arresting several members of the pro-democracy movement in a secret trial, and the resumption of execution after decades.

Myanmar has been locked in a military conflict ever since the military seized power on the grounds of alleged irregularities in the November 2020 election won by the National League for Democracy led by Suu Kyi.

NLD denied fraud and has since been dissolved along with other 39 parties for failure to register for undecided election held by the generals.

Activists urged the military to refrain from conducting elections, as it will intensify violent clashes between the military and Myanmar pro-democracy resistant movements.
