TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk. (NCKL) is considering the possibility of exporting nickel sulfate to Korea and Japan. The company, also known as Harita Nickel, has already exported this commodity to China.
Roy A. Arfandy, President Director Harita Nickel, revealed that the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturers are located in China. As a result, most of Harita Nickel's products are exported to China.
"However, we are open to the possibility of exporting to other countries, such as electric vehicle battery manufacturers in Korea or Japan. We will certainly explore opportunities to sell or export to those countries," said Roy during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.
Currently, the company has not considered the domestic market for nickel sulfate due to the absence of cathode and precursor factories in the country.
"So, unfortunately, we have to export our nickel sulfate because there is no domestic buyer," he explained.
Previously, Harita Nickel, through its associated entity PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), made its inaugural export of 5,584 tons of nickel sulfate to China on Friday, June 18, 2023.
The nickel sulfate was packaged in 290 containers and shipped to China via vessel. Roy aims to achieve a total shipment of 240,000 tons of nickel sulfate per year in accordance with the plant's production capacity.
"In the future, the company will strive to send approximately four vessels to meet the demand target for nickel sulfate production," Roy said as quoted by Antara on Saturday, June 18, 2023.
He explained that this export marks a new milestone for Harita Nickel in the nickel downstream business circle.
The nickel sulfate is the result of purification on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku Province, and will be used in the production of lithium batteries with high nickel content.
In the future, the use of lithium batteries is predicted to continue increasing, especially in the electric vehicle industry.
