TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Indonesian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Volunteers, Fajar Eri Dianto, calls on internet users or netizens not to be trapped in a consumptive lifestyle in this digital era.
Fajar observes that a lot of netizens are trapped in a consumerist culture due to the fear of missing out or FOMO, a new psychological phenomenon that has been well-known today.
FOMO is a feeling of uneasiness about not being included in current trends that others are experiencing. It also refers to an anxious feeling about not getting an opportunity or the best option according to social media. People with FOMO tend to feel the need to fulfill non-primary desires.
“Moreover, online loans and paylater services are rampant on various market platforms. These features provide easy loans that can stimulate someone to be consumptive,” the digital literacy activist explained.
To escape the consumptive trap, he emphasizes that factual financial management and planning are necessary. This can be done by prioritizing primary needs and allocating funds from the salary earned. It is also vital to create neat and periodic reports or financial records.
“Optimize the income for basic needs, for example, 50 percent of salary for primary needs, 30 percent for non-primary needs, and the remaining 20 percent for savings, investment or emergency funds,” Fajar outlined.
