TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said Indonesia is being eyed by well-known electric vehicle or EV manufacturers. They, he claimed, are eager to invest in the country.
“Because all materials [used in car manufacturing] exist in Indonesia. Now well-known car brands, famous car factories, and electric car companies are interested to invest in Indonesia,” he said during the groundbreaking ceremony of a copper foil factory in Gresik, East Java, Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
The copper foil factory was built by PT Hailiang Nova Material Indonesia in the Special Economic Zone for the Java Integrated Industry and Industrial Port Estate (KEK JIIPE) managed by PT AKR Corporindo Tbk. (AKRA). The factory is adjacent to the PT Freeport Indonesia smelter.
According to him, the Chinese company will later manage PT Freeport Indonesia's smelter output. “So it becomes finished or semi-finished goods which we will later use for lithium or EV battery or the electric car itself,” he explained.
One car requires approximately 59 kilograms of copper, he informed. With the current rapid development of the EV industry, the President predicted that the need for copper will skyrocket.
On that occasion, he also warned the public about choosing the next president in the 2024 election. Future leaders, he emphasized, will determine Indonesia’s leap to be a developed country given its various mining potentials.
If choosing the wrong president, Jokowi said Indonesia may stay as a developing country just like Latin American countries. “We don't want it, we want to become a developed country.”
