TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi talked about the history of the Jakarta Fair (PRJ) in a speech at the opening ceremony of the annual event at JIExpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. Heru said the fair was initially held near the National Monument or Monas.
Back in 1968, the Chamber of Commerce (Kadin) chair Syamsuddin Mangan suggested the city government hold an exhibition to boost the people’s economy.
“This idea was welcomed by Governor Ali Sadikin who wanted to unite various night markets which at that time still spread in several areas of Jakarta to become the Jakarta Fair,” Heru Budi said on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
Since then, Jakarta's anniversary has always been celebrated by holding PRJ. “It is held to celebrate the city's anniversary on June 22,” he added.
According to him, the exhibition keeps evolving into a more modern exhibition show. Indonesia’s best shows are also presented at the event every year. “Starting from an exhibition in Monas, [PRJ] then keeps transforming into a modern exhibition showing diverse national and international flagship programs.”
Heru hopes that the 54th Jakarta Fair 2023 can boost the economy of Indonesia, especially Jakarta. “Let's together make this event a platform to strengthen the domestic economy, optimize the potential of local products, and encourage industrial and trade growth in Indonesia,” he said.
