TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Food Security, Maritime Affairs and Agriculture Agency Head Suharini Eliawati keeps monitoring the condition of sacrificial animals in the capital ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebration to guarantee that animals are free from foot and mouth disease (FMD)
According to her, there are three animal diseases that must be anticipated prior to the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, namely FMD, lumpy skin disease (LSD) or lato-lato disease, and zoonotic diseases.
“What I mentioned last is not a zoonotic disease that is transmitted from animals to humans or vice versa, but this is very detrimental,” Suharini said on Wednesday, June 14, during a meeting with Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission B.
Suharini said the city administration imposes strict rules for imported sacrificial animals. A permit is required to bring a goat, sheep, or cow to the capital.
“As of June 13, there are 59 shelters [of livestock] in Jakarta. There are 99 letters of recommendation in the queue that we must issue. Why [they have not been released yet?], because we still need animal health certificates from the local area,” she explained.
The agency has implemented efforts to trace sacrificial animals infected with FMD. One of them is by putting animal earrings with an identification barcode.
“[Through the barcode,] we can read on the Android [smartphones] about where did the cow come from, how old is it, and whether it is vaccinated against FMD or not,” she said.
For LSD disease, she went on, the agency has not yet obliged vaccinations. However, the Eid al-Adha animals must pass the PCR test to be considered safe. “So there will be a certificate of animal health. So I can say that consumers can ask whether the cow to be purchased is equipped with health certificates,” Suharini concluded.
