Jakarta, KLHK Ink Deal to Reduce Air Pollution

6 June 2023 00:00 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Environment Agency Head Asep Kuswanto stated that based on a study, motorized vehicle exhausts contributed 67 percent of air pollution in the city. To improve air quality, the agency is determined to apply three strategies; conducting dissemination, imposing a fine coefficient of a motorized vehicle tax, and implementing a parking fee disincentive.

“Hopefully, this can trigger, provoke, and increase public awareness to carry out emission tests,” Asep said at the vehicle emissions test event in Ragunan, South Jakarta, on Monday, June 5, 2023.

According to Asep, the three policies will encourage massive emissions tests and have an impact on improving air quality in Jakarta. The emissions test held on Monday, June 5, 2023, started at the north parking area of Ragunan Zoo.

The city administration held the test for free. A total of 2,615 vehicles underwent the test on Monday, June 5, 2023.

Jakarta along with the Environment and Forestry Ministry and other stakeholders also signed an agreement on the commitment to control Jakarta's air quality. This is expected to improve air quality in the capital and its surroundings.

The ministry’s Director of Air Pollution Control Luckmi Purwandari said that the cooperation is a form of the government's seriousness in providing citizens' rights to clean air. “Strategies and joint actions will be established to improve air quality,” she said.

The National Police Traffic Corps’ Director of Security and Safety Brigadier General Ery Nursatari added that one of the main targets of the cooperation is to reduce air pollution. The Traffic Corps will participate by formulating vehicle exhaust regulations.

Ery further underlined that the need to make efforts that prevent air pollution is the responsibility of all parties. He hoped that vehicle emissions tests can be held sustainably.
