TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has spoken up about Communication and Information (Komifo) Minister Johnny G. Plate who is named a suspect in a corruption case. The Attorney General's Office on May 17, named the NasDem Party Secretary General a suspect in the corruption case of the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) construction project.
“We must respect the existing legal process,” the President said in a press statement at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, East Jakarta, on Friday, May 19, 2023, before leaving for the G7 Summit in Japan.
Various speculations emerged a few days before Plate was named a suspect. One of them is the link between the legal process against Plate and the NasDem Party's support for the former governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, as a presidential candidate in the 2024 election. Moreover, the pro-government party has recently joined forces with the opposition.
Asked about the issue of political intervention, the state head believed that the Attorney General's Office is professional in handling the case and is transparent. “The Attorney General's Office will be transparent and I am sure it will work professionally,” he emphasized.
Jokowi thus officially appointed Coordinating Minister of Politics, Legal, and Security Mahfud MD as Acting Kominfo Minister.
