TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) Director-General Qu Dongyu highlighted the impacts of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing during the FAO global meeting in Bali on May 8, 2023. One of them is on the people’s livelihood.

“IUU fishing is a threat to the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources and ecosystems, and of the livelihoods of 600 million people that depend on them,” Qu Dongyu said in his remarks at the 4th Meeting of the Parties to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) in Bali on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Dongyu said that sustainable capture fisheries and aquaculture have tremendous potential to feed and nourish the world’s growing population. In addition, they increase the demand for healthy aquatic foods.

“The PSMA can support the transformation of sustainable fisheries worldwide,” he added.

To date, Dongyu claimed that at least 101 countries comply with PSMA, which is included in the three most binding international fisheries instruments.

“The PSMA is making a difference, but we need to continue to boost our collective efforts to create truly sustainable fisheries,” Dongyu acknowledged.

The 4th PSMA Meeting was held in Badung Regency, Bali, from May 8 to 12, 2023. The biennial meeting was attended by more than 200 delegates from around the world with representatives of intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations. Yet there were only 120 delegates attending this week’s meeting directly.
