TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said the country’s correctional system should be transformed from only being the center of the criminal justice system into a place for social recovery and reintegration.
“This is a form of the Indonesian government's commitment to place correctional facilities as one of the Indonesian Criminal Justice Subsystems. The correctional system must move from the Pre-Adjudication, Adjudication, to Post-Adjudication stages,” Yasonna said while leading the ceremony of the 59th Correctional Service Day (HBP) that falls on April 27 held in the field of the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s headquarters, on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
According to him, this goal also requires expanding the role of correctional officers to fully participate in the success of restorative justice which is actually in line with the concept of social reintegration, namely the restoration of life relationships, life, and livelihood.
He also reminded the correctional officers to be prepared and keep in mind that the Law on Correctional System and Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code have made paradigm-shifting into a necessity.
“Crimination in the future will not only be able to provide a just settlement but also restore it. In the future, sentencing must also pay attention to the victim, involve the community, and the responsibility of the perpetrator,” Yasonna Laoly said.
